We describe the main issues of migrating from a VMware VSphere environment to the Open Source Virtualization Platform Ovirt using low-cost hardware.

The concept of Software Defined Data Center is analyzed in order to derive an architecture of components as a generalization. We identify three types of building blocks (namely Communications Block, Fabric Block and Management and Core Services Block). Next, the actual technologies used within each Block is described as well as the migration of configurations of SDDC services (VNFs, DNS, email, monitoring, etc) from VSphere to Ovirt. Finally, points of experience with running the Data Center for a research and science community are shared.
